Africa Focus: The British Royal Wedding, Feelgoodism and the Colonial Jumbie
    Sunday, May 20 @ 19:27:02 UTC
    BritainBy Tyehimba Salandy
    May 20, 2018

Ten years ago, British ‘royalty’, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla visited the Caribbean and locals prostrated before them. Local leaders made arrangements for them to play the Steelpan and the sacred Rastafarian Nyabinghi drums. Leslie from Africaspeaks.com wrote an insightful article titled Royal Visit Highlights Lingering Colonialism that brought attention to the dynamics of colonialism in this visit. This article is as relevant today as it was ten years ago when it was written, given the celebratory eruptions at the wedding of British monarch Prince Harry and his bride Meghan Markle. Yet the region is poorer today for elevating fake royalty to dizzying heights of reverence while neglecting the royalty inherent in resistant Caribbean voices who have worked hard at improving Caribbean societies.

While many people gush at royalty and the “power of love”, for people of the Caribbean and wider global south, who are still faced with the structures of British coloniality imbedded deeply in our society and the world we live in, it is an opportunity to reflect on these issues.

World Focus: Why the British said no to Europe
    Saturday, June 25 @ 15:11:48 UTC
    BritainBy John Pilger
    June 25, 2016 - johnpilger.com

The majority vote by Britons to leave the European Uni0n was an act of raw democracy. Millions of ordinary people refused to be bullied, intimidated and dismissed with open contempt by their presumed betters in the major parties, the leaders of the business and banking oligarchy and the media.

This was, in great part, a vote by those angered and demoralised by the sheer arrogance of the apologists for the "remain" campaign and the dismemberment of a socially just civil life in Britain. The last bastion of the historic reforms of 1945, the National Health Service, has been so subverted by Tory and Labour-supported privateers it is fighting for its life.

A forewarning came when the Treasurer, George Osborne, the embodiment of both Britain's ancient regime and the banking mafia in Europe, threatened to cut £30 billion from public services if people voted the wrong way; it was blackmail on a shocking scale.

World Focus: George Galloway's Respect could help Britain to break the political impasse
    Monday, April 02 @ 17:53:51 UTC
    BritainBy Tariq Ali
    March 30, 2012 - guardian.co.uk

UK politics has been governed by Thatcherism for decades. Galloway's triumph should force people to rethink their passivity

George Galloway's stunning electoral triumph in the Bradford by-election has shaken the petrified world of English politics. It was unexpected, and for that reason the Respect campaign was treated by much of the media (Helen Pidd of the Guardian being an honourable exception) as a loony fringe show. A BBC toady, an obviously partisan compere on a local TV election show, who tried to mock and insult Galloway, should be made to eat his excremental words. The Bradford seat, a Labour fiefdom since 1973, was considered safe and the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, had been planning a celebratory visit to the city till the news seeped through at 2 am. He is now once again focused on his own future. Labour has paid the price for its failure to act as an opposition, having imagined that all it had to do was wait and the prize would come its way. Scottish politics should have forced a rethink. Perhaps the latest development in English politics now will, though I doubt it. Galloway has effectively urinated on all three parties. The Lib Dems and Tories explain their decline by the fact that too many people voted!

There is a tendency to portray the British ruling class as a somewhat buffoonish collection of toffs, removed from the realities of life.

And there is some truth in it. The establishment in Britain is indeed an inbred collection of incompetents. But they are also an incredibly nasty and dangerous bunch of people.

Last week we got an insight into their world.

British former special forces officer Simon Mann was released from Equatorial Guinea, in central Africa, where he had been sentenced in July 2008 to just over 34 years in jail.

ON the same day the BBC reported that former Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz was to go on trial after five years in prison over the deaths of a group of Baghdad merchants in 1992, it was rumoured the former prime minister of Britain will be indicted for crimes against humanity.

The list of charges is long and not confined to the many alleged crimes in Iraq. Mr Blair's whereabouts are uncertain; he has been sighted occasionally in occupied East Jerusalem where he is acting as "peace" envoy for the "Quartet".

Most recently, he has been facilitating industrial zones for the employment of Palestinians and for the removal of a few of the over 500 Israeli Occupation Force roadblocks.

War and Terror: Gordon Brown tries to hide war link to bomb attacks

Gordon Brown has a problem – and a plan for how to deal with it.

He knows that it was anger at the Iraq war that ultimately brought down Tony Blair.

But he is just as committed to pressing ahead with the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan as Blair was.

That is why Brown is determined to stop people from blaming the Iraq war for terrorist attacks in Britain. But he's going about it in a different and more subtle way than his predecessor.

If we believe the corporate media, the dark under current of Islamic extremism, and that of the "al-Qaeda" database, is so strong it was able to sweep up promising neurologist Mohammed Asha, who became a would-be terrorist apparently more adept at brain surgery than cooking up bombs.

According to the cheesy British tabloid the Mirror, however, Asha and his wife, Marwah, are your garden variety Palestinian terrorists, the sort who throw away their lives, including an infant son, Anas, due to a self-destructive "hate against the West over Palestine.... The couple, from Palestinian families, blamed Britain and the US for backing Israel's 'occupation', relatives said." According to Asha's father Yunis Dana, the couple "aren't the type to be interested in political Islam," so it remains a mystery why they would team up with so-called Muslim radicals. As well, Marwah was radicalized because people made fun or her veil.

Obviously, the British and Scotland branch of "al-Qaeda" need to call the home office, as "al-Qaeda in Iraq" is far more effective at car bombs and the UK version need a bit of tutoring. "A vehicle that crashed into Scotland's largest airport was being treated as a potential terror attack linked to two car bombs found in London, police said Saturday," reports MSNBC. "Britain raised its security alert to 'critical'–the highest level possible and an indication that terrorist attacks are imminent. U.S. airports increased safety precautions." In other words, goons with automatic weapons and dogs, reminiscent of Nazi soldiers on train platforms demanding to see papers, will be sending a message to holiday commuters next week, as America celebrates its independence to shop, eat hot dogs, and blow off fireworks made by slaves in China.

War and Terror: Absurd London 'Bomb Plot' Inaugurates 'Control Freak' Brown
    Friday, June 29 @ 19:29:38 UTC
    BritainBy Kurt Nimmo, kurtnimmo.com

"British police Friday thwarted a car-bomb attack that would have brought carnage to the streets of London just days before the second anniversary of the July 7, 2005, bombings that claimed 52 lives," writes Nile Gardiner for the neocon house organ, the National Review Online. "The car was packed with nails, gas canisters and petrol containers, and left outside a nightclub near Piccadilly Circus. This latest attempt to kill and maim hundreds of civilians is most likely the work of al Qaeda or one of its numerous British-based affiliates. It was timed to coincide with the departure of Tony Blair, and the entrance of new Prime Minister Gordon Brown. It also coincided with Blair's appointment as the Quartet's new Middle East envoy in the face of strong opposition in the Arab world."

Racism Watch: Schools report shows young people's lives are blighted by racism
    Thursday, December 14 @ 23:26:27 UTC
    BritainBy Terry Wrigley, socialistworker.co.uk
    December 14, 2006

Britain's schools are institutionally racist against black pupils – that is the clear conclusion of a recent report from the Department for Education and Skills (DfES).

The report was leaked to the Independent newspaper last weekend. It shows that black pupils are three times as likely as white pupils to be excluded from schools.

They also stand only a fifth the chance of being identified as "gifted and talented".

Needless to say, schools minister Lord Adonis has ducked the issue and, it appears, has tried to get the report shelved. Perhaps he feels he has too much to do privatising schools to care much about social justice.

Simon Basketter looks at the reality of race and class today

Poor and marginalised people living in Britain have attracted some false friends in recent weeks. The rebranded Tories sent the highly unlikely radical Iain Duncan Smith MP off to look at education, and he came back with the conclusion that the education system lets down white working people.

The Telegraph waded in with a piece headlined "White, Poor, Male – And Doomed To Fail" and the Economist shed crocodile tears with an article entitled "Poor Whites: The Forgotten Underclass".

A tagline on the Economist piece summed up the story: "Muslims and blacks get more attention. But poor whites are in a worse state."

The most basic point that those on the left should make is that this campaign is designed to bolster racism.

BritainIt's war and racism that fuel division

    by Esme Choonara, socialistworker.co.uk

Jack Straw's attack on Muslim women wearing the veil was not an innocent attempt to "raise debate". He was speaking in a climate of Islamophobia fuelled by the "war on terror".

It is this climate that promotes segregation and fuels racist attacks, not the decision of some Muslim women to cover their faces, as Straw claimed.

Leading anti-war campaigners have challenged the latest round of scapegoating.

War and Terror: Bomb Plot 'Key Player' a CIA-ISI Asset
    Thursday, August 17 @ 21:04:44 UTC
    BritainBy Kurt Nimmo, kurtnimmo.com

Leave it up to the corporate media to ignore the obvious and continue to push the original Brothers Grimm fairy tale about liquid bombers taking out jetliners because they hate our freedoms.

For instance, the chief patsy in the supposed terror plot—a plot sans any compelling evidence, or for that matter any evidence, period—Rashid Rauf, "is a close relative of Jaish-e-Mohammed leader Masood Azhar," according to NDTV.

Not mentioned here is the fact Jaish-e-Mohammed is a creature of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), that is to say the CIA. "During the Soviet-Afghan war of the 1980s saw the enhancement of the covert action capabilities of the ISI by the CIA," notes the decidedly less than conspiratorial Wikipedia. "A number of officers from the ISI's Covert Action Division received training in the US and many covert action experts of the CIA were attached to the ISI to guide it in its operations against the Soviet troops by using the Afghan Mujahideen, Islamic fundamentalists of Pakistan and Arab volunteers."

"Had this plot been carried out, the loss of life to innocent civilians would have been on an unprecedented scale." These are the words of British Secretary of Home Security, Dr. John Reid, when forecasting the catastrophic outcome had the airline terrorist plot taken off.

    "Unprecedented"? Compared to what??

"We cannot stress too highly the severity that this plot represented. Put simpler, this was intended to be mass murder on an unimaginable scale." This is how a uniformed high ranking Brit, featured on CNN, described what he thought would be the carnage had the terrorist plot carried out.

War and Terror: Fake Terror Obfuscates Lebanon and Iraq Failures

    Britainby Kurt Nimmo, kurtnimmo.com

Unable to window dress the obvious failure to eradicate growing resistance in Lebanon, Iraq, and Afghanistan—even with the mighty propaganda power of a complaisant media—the neocon intelligence apparatus has staged yet another terrorist event, or would be terrorist event.

"The 21 terrorist suspects arrested in the U.K. overnight had a 'well-advanced plan' to detonate electronic devices or liquid explosives disguised as beverages or onboard U.S.-bound aircraft, a sophisticated plot suggestive of al-Qaeda, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said," reports Bloomberg. "The attacks were aimed at U.S.-bound planes of United Airlines, American Airlines and Continental Airlines at London's Heathrow Airport, the Associated Press reported, citing unidentified [undoubtedly neocon] U.S. counter-terrorism officials in Washington."
